A long, empty corridor with a herringbone parquet floor runs between tall arched windows letting in daylight on the left and closed dark wooden double doors on the right, globe lamps hanging from its ceiling, to another pair of closed doors at its end.

Sweden’s Ministries Block the ChatGPT and Claude Websites

Sweden’s Government Offices has blocked the ChatGPT and Claude websites on work computers and steers staff to Microsoft’s Copilot; the models stay available through an internal platform.

As of Monday, staff at Sweden’s Government Offices, which takes in the Prime Minister’s Office and the ministries, can no longer reach the ChatGPT and Claude websites from their work computers. They are steered instead to Microsoft’s Copilot, which the Government Offices has approved and whose security it raised after a review, according to internal information seen by Sveriges Radio’s Ekot, which reported the block on Friday. The Government OfficesRegeringskansliet, headed by the prime minister, comprises the Prime Minister’s Office, the ministries and an Office for Administrative Affairs, whose shared services for the ministries include IT support. It had on average 4,848 staff in service in 2025, including those posted abroad, by its own count.

It is not a national ban, and the models themselves stay. “Within Intric, staff still have access to the language models ChatGPT and Claude,” the Government Offices wrote to the broadcaster SVT, in this paper’s translation.

What goes, the same email said, is “the browser interface for the AI services ChatGPT and Claude,” which “will no longer be reachable from the Government Offices’ work computers as of Oct. 26,” in this paper’s translation. The block is meant to keep staff on the services the Government Offices has approved, Ekot reported.

Mikael Wettercrantz, the Government Offices’ digitalization director, declined an interview with Ekot, but in a comment on the intranet he said that using AI services without an agreement can have “consequences for our information security,” in this paper’s translation. The press office would not give details of how Copilot had been tightened, saying it was a matter of security.

The line is drawn between approved services and direct web access, not around the models: Microsoft’s tool is open to all staff, while the ChatGPT and Claude models stay in, for some, through an internal platform. All employees have access to Microsoft’s AI tool, the Government Offices wrote to SVT, and its press office told Ekot that some of the staff would keep a platform for AI assistants that the Government Offices developed itself, through which ChatGPT and Claude can be reached. For OpenAI and Anthropic, what closes is the direct route: their own websites, on ministry desks.Claude Inside CopilotMicrosoft offers Anthropic’s models in Copilot, with Anthropic acting as a Microsoft subprocessor. Microsoft’s general control for them is off by default in the European Union; separate controls apply in some Microsoft 365 apps. Neither Ekot nor SVT reported which Copilot product or settings the Government Offices uses.

Ekot’s survey found the Government Offices is not alone. The Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care have put in blocks of their own, and the Enforcement Authority is preparing a decision, Ekot reported. The Government Offices had already restricted the use of the AI service DeepSeek.

The risks of unregulated AI use have drawn attention at other agencies, Ekot reported. An internal audit at the Transport Administration found a widespread and risky use of about ten different AI services earlier this year, and wrote: “We have seen several examples of problematic use of open AI services. The examples concern both the sensitivity of the information that has been entered and how the AI-generated answers have been handled.” The translation is this paper’s.

Daily Cortex is written with AI models, including Anthropic’s Claude, and fact-checked with OpenAI’s GPT models.
